Why March is the Perfect Time to Refresh Your Resolutions

I know what you’re thinking. It’s already March, and most people have already planned their New Year’s resolutions way back in January. But if you’re just like me, you know the story: by the time February rolls around, most of those well-intentioned goals have fallen by the wayside. It’s disheartening, isn’t it? We set out with such enthusiasm, only to feel defeated and discouraged when we don’t follow through.

But take heart, for the Lord’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). March holds the key to a revival of your resolutions, and an opportunity to realign your goals with God’s purposes. The season of Lent, which typically falls in March, is a time for spiritual reflection, repentance, and drawing closer to our Heavenly Father. And if you haven’t penned down your goals for the year yet, there’s no better time than this season to prayerfully set resolutions that honor God and further His kingdom.

March presents an excellent opportunity to reflect on the experiences and lessons learned since the year began. It is a season of spiritual renewal aligning with the period of Lent. You’ve had a couple of months to dip your toes into the new year and observe how your resolutions align with God’s plan. So, what insights can you draw from this time?

Think about this: Many of us receive our work assignments early in the year. Perhaps your boss or superiors laid out the organization’s goals or objectives during a January target-setting session. But without diving into the actual work, it’s all just words on paper. As you immerse yourself, armed with discernment from the Lord, your schedule and workflow become clearer. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

If you’re a teacher, those couple of months are enough time to get to know your students – their work, interactions, and unique personalities bestowed by the Creator. You start to see potential opportunities with them, as well as pitfalls to avoid.

Practical tips

So, take the month of March to prayerfully reevaluate your goals. Consider:

  • What are my clients/students/superiors expecting from me as a faithful servant?
  • How do these expectations differ from my initial perceptions before seeking the Lord?
  • What adjustments should I make to better fit this year’s circumstances and align with God’s will?

So, why March? Because it’s the perfect time to revisit those resolutions you set earlier, renewing them through the spiritual discipline of Lent and the ever-present guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Alright, let’s talk about fine-tuning the resolutions you laid down back in January. Well, it’s March now, and life’s circumstances may have unfolded differently than expected. Don’t worry, because now is a good time to seek His wisdom and adjust your course according to God’s will.

First, let’s reflect on why revising our strategies is crucial through the lens of Scripture. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

At the beginning of the year, we thought that we had our goals all figured out. But things changed due to the unseen plans of our Sovereign Lord. And we know that His ways are always higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Perhaps you hit a roadblock of trials or temptations. One of my goals for 2024 is to lose 10 kg by the end of the year. To speed-run the process, I employed several strategies: calorie tracking through MyFitnessPal app, intermittent fasting, eating baked salmon and salad every lunch, etc. On hindsight, that was simply too ambitious! By the end of February, my weight bounced back to where I’d started.

Whatever the case, our strategies need to evolve to align with God’s perfect path for our lives.

Practical Tips

Now, let’s explore practical tips and techniques for fine-tuning those resolutions:

  1. Get Specific: Take a prayerful look at your resolutions and ask yourself: Are they crystal-clear reflections of God’s will, or are they clouded by worldly desires? Use the S.M.A.R.T. framework to reframe your goals: are your 2024 goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound?
  2. Flexibility is Key: Repeat after me: it’s okay to change course when the Lord redirects our path. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Sometimes we’ve got to pivot and surrender our plans to find God’s way. So don’t be afraid to tweak your strategies as you seek His guidance along the journey.
  3. Keep it Real: One reason why our new year’s resolutions fail is that we were too ambitious at the start of the year. We need to take reality into account. So set goals that stretch your faith, but are still within the realm of what God has equipped you for. That way, you’ll stay motivated, avoid burnout, and bear lasting fruit for the Kingdom.

Let’s be real – sticking to those New Year’s resolutions can be a grind. When you first set those goals, you were fired up and ready to chase after them with everything you had. But a few months in, that blazing motivation starts to flicker. The daily grind weighs you down, obstacles pop up, and your commitment begins to waver. Sound familiar?

But don’t lose hope just yet! The Bible reminds us in Galatians 6:9 – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Your struggles and perseverance are not in vain. Just as Jesus endured the cross, keeping His eyes on the eternal prize, we too must fix our gaze beyond temporary challenges.

Practical Tips

So how do we re-ignite that burning passion when motivation wanes? Here are some tips to reignite the fire:

  • Reconnect with your “why” – When you’re feeling unmotivated, go back to the core reasons you set those resolutions in the first place. What dreams and values were you chasing? Realign your goals with God’s greater purposes for your life.
  • Get creative to stay inspired – Switch things up with some motivational hacks like visualization, Scripture affirmations, or celebrating mini-milestones. Finding fresh ways to inspire yourself can reignite that spark of enthusiasm.
  • Embrace a growth mindset – Setbacks aren’t failures; they’re opportunities to grow stronger. Keep reminding yourself that God is actively refining you through challenges (Philippians 1:6). Today’s challenges prepare you for greater things tomorrow!
  • Rally the troops – You weren’t meant to run this race alone! Lean on spiritual mentors, small groups, or accountability partners to keep you encouraged and on track (Proverbs 27:17). A little positive peer pressure can work wonders.
  • Practice self-care – Don’t neglect caring for your whole self – mind, body, and spirit. Prioritize rest, nutrition, exercise, and nurturing your emotional health (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). You’re running a spiritual marathon here! (Having said that, see Why Self-care Is Not Enough)
  • Welcome God’s grace– Stumbles happen, but don’t let them derail you. Extend the same grace to yourself that God has given (Ephesians 4:32). Get back up and keep pushing forward.

Sustaining motivation is an ongoing effort, but one made infinitely easier when you know that the Spirit of God is at work in you, to will and to act according to His good purpose (Philippians 2:13). Fix your eyes on Jesus, tap into His strength, and let Him reignite your passion for the abundant spiritual harvest ahead! Don’t quit – your perseverance will pay off.

Conclusion

The best time to plan is always now.

You may stumble on this post in April, May, or even November, but the truth remains: the optimal time to map your aspirations, if you haven’t already, is right now – this present month. Not back in January (unless you’re reading this then, in which case, seize the moment!).

Remember, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Today offers a new opportunity to sow the seeds of your dreams, nurturing them as you move forward. So get out your pen, notebook or device, and refresh your 2024 resolutions – starting right here, right now.
